Visual identity: Bermudian education system transformation.

Client: Innovation Unit

Learning First is a collaborative design project undertaken by the Innovation Unit in partnership with the Bermudian Ministry of Education.

Their objective was to develop an improved school system for Bermuda that is locally relevant, globally connected, engaging and challenging.

As a brand designer contracted to the Innovation Unit, I created the visual identity and then worked in partnership with the agency over the project's two year lifespan to design workshop materials and artefacts as well as branded campaign collateral.

Challenge

The Bermudian Ministry of Education wanted a visual identity for their school transformation project that felt inclusive and celebrated the Bermudian spirit. The brand needed to speak to different audiences; educators, parents policy makers, the local business community, and act as an umbrella under which they could work and move forward, together

The project required a brand that has structural integrity with bold, identifiable elements while being flexible and adaptive so that it can be taken and used by non-designers; educators, researchers, government workers.

The materials themselves needed to be places that facilitated collaboration amongst the project's broad group of stakeholders, so accessible tools and designs were important considerations when developing brand and materials.

Process

I collaborated with Brand Designer Georgie Batt in developing the Learning First brand. During the initial brand research and design phases, we worked closely with Innovation Unit as well as stakeholders from the Bermudian Government in a series of small workshops. There was an opportunity for wider Ministry of Education staff to feed into the identity design through a visual survey.

Approachability was a big consideration when building the brand. We wanted to create a visual identity that looked and felt approachable and also provide tools that meant Innovation Unit and Bermudian Government collaborators could own and use the brand confidently.

Assets and collateral were supplied in formats that could be taken, adapted, remixed and reused, and technical training was provided. Where required, brand assets were supplied as templates in drop and drag cloud formats, like Google Slides and Squarespace.
